Who We Are
Armatyr was founded in 2026 by Dr. Luis Vargas and Dr. Michael Rushanan to provide cybersecurity engineering, cybersecurity testing, regulatory consulting, and technical expert services for organizations operating in highly regulated and technically complex environments.
Armatyr's roots go back more than a decade earlier: our founders have professionally contributed to the cybersecurity engineering, testing, and regulatory support underlying hundreds of medical device development activities across the medical technology industry since 2015. That experience forms the foundation of every engagement we perform today.

The cybersecurity professionals who provide regulatory gap assessment, develop the threat model, perform the risk assessment, execute the penetration test, and implement secure code are the same people who present findings to engineering, quality, and regulatory teams, and regulators. We believe technical work should be directly supported by the people who performed it.

Dr. Michael Rushanan
Dr. Michael Rushanan is a co-founder of Armatyr and a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University. His work focuses on systems security, network security, applied cryptography, embedded systems, and medical device cybersecurity.
Over the course of his career, he has supported the cybersecurity of more than one hundred medical devices through threat modeling, cybersecurity risk assessment, penetration testing, software bill of materials (SBOM) analysis, secure software development, and regulatory consulting. His work spans FDA premarket submissions, EU MDR, AAMI standards, NIST guidance, and secure development life cycle implementation.
Dr. Rushanan earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University, where his research focused on the security and privacy of embedded and networked systems. He continues to teach and conduct research in cybersecurity while supporting industry through engineering consulting and expert technical analysis.
Dr. Luis Vargas
Dr. Luis Vargas is a co-founder of Armatyr and leads cybersecurity engineering engagements involving medical devices, cloud systems, embedded software, and connected healthcare technologies.
Before founding Armatyr, he served as Director of Medical Cybersecurity at Harbor Labs, where he led cybersecurity testing, threat modeling, cybersecurity risk assessments, security architecture reviews, penetration testing, software composition analysis, and FDA cybersecurity consulting for medical device manufacturers.
Dr. Vargas received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of Florida. His research examined the intersection of cybersecurity, data science, network analysis, and machine learning, with applications including hospital network security, medical device security, and disinformation detection. He continues to publish research while supporting clients through cybersecurity engineering and regulatory consulting.

We continue to advance the field through research, teaching, and professional service. Our work spans cybersecurity engineering, medical device security, artificial intelligence, and healthcare technology, allowing us to apply emerging research directly to engineering practice.
Beyond our commercial work, we support the broader healthcare and cybersecurity communities through academic collaboration, open-source software, and pro bono work with nonprofit organizations advancing diabetes care and connected medical technologies.
We believe that engineering practice and research should inform one another. The problems we encounter in industry shape our research, and our research improves the methods, tools, and engineering approaches we bring to our clients.
