The authors present an encryption framework designed to protect medical images without the performance overhead that makes standard encryption impractical for large-scale imaging systems. This document has no formal abstract, so the hypothesis behind the work is quoted below:

Using modern encryption techniques, it is possible to store studies in an encrypted format, then transmit them in the clear and decrypt them on the receiving client. This can be done with low cost using modern algorithms and new x86 instructions.
